It doesn't sound like a treatment I would have approved of for my son. It doesn't sound like treatment at all. It sounds like electric shock treatment. It sounds like medical assault--torture. It does not sound like something that should be done to children, or anybody else. This is a NIMH funded project to treat early-onset schizophrenia in children, here is a link: http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT00757497
What is disgusting is it is not the primary goal to benefit the study enrollees, but simply to see if they can survive without (how much is not quantified) damage and the secondary goal is to improve attention span and lessen auditory hallucinations. I thought there is supposed to be standard in human research that the benefits must outweigh the potential risks, to protect the patients. I may be alarmed about nothing, and I truly hope so. But, my experience with the system thus far, my education and my ability to reason, have all made me skeptical; is this another example of the type of unethical research which may lead to unethical practice?
