What Are 'Good Choices' For Treating Dementia?

While the Food and Drug Administration has warned doctors that using antipsychotic drugs in elderly patients with dementia increases their risks of death, doctors continue the practice because they have few other good choices, said Dr. Daniel J. Carlat, editor in chief of The Carlat Psychiatry Report, a medical education newsletter for psychiatrists. more at The New York Times  The phrase, 'few other good choices' confuses me--does it mean that using neuroleptic drugs, which have been labeled a 'hazard' to elderly patients, by the FDA; is a 'good choice'!?!

How can drugs labeled  a 'hazard' to vulnerable elderly people, by the FDA, continue to be tested on elderly people diagnosed with DEMENTIA?   This Drug Trial of Seroquel and Depakote ER in a Veterans Administration facility using elderly Veterans with dementia as 'volunteers' is a marketing trial--not for the patients benefit, IMO---It is an attempt to validate the use of these terotogenic drugs in vulnerable veterans, so that it can be published in some psychiatry journal proclaiming the 'safety and efficacy' for these drugs to be used on elderly people with dementia.  Psychiatry Continues treating human beings with drugs that are harmful and do not 'treat' but cause illness; justifying it by stating there is 'no other choice' when it is plain---psychiatry virtually IGNORES other choices purposely!  Treatments which are not drugs, are minimized or NOT provided--yet drugs 'off-label' and for no known indication, are pushed upon desperate people who are NOT told their risks....more: Drug Trial and Seroquel Blamed for Drug Deaths
