THANK YOU Daniel Hazen for speaking out at the Occupy Torrey Tirade!!!
via Jim Gottstein:
Hello. We’d like to take a moment to let you know about an important and powerful event that is taking place in New York City next month.
On Saturday, October 6th, 2012, the Center for Human Rights of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry, MindFreedom, PsychRights, and other grassroots activist organizations are gathering for a day of rally and protest against force and coercion in mental health systems.
A great deal of the practice and protocol of psychiatry conflicts with the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities and some common treatments meet the UN’s criteria for torture. It is for this reason that some of the most influential and impassioned speakers from the psychiatric survivors movement and organizations working for protective legislation and social transformation will be speaking across the street from the UN on Saturday, October 6th, 2012, at 12:00 pm.
Speakers include: Mad In America blogger, survivor and advocate, Laura Delano/ longtime grassroots activist and organizer (911 Citizens Watch, COPA, and CHOICES) John Judge/ MindFreedom NY’s Harry Lichtenstein/ Rights for Imprisoned People with Psychiatric Disabilities (RIPPD) representative Lisa Ortega, and Dr. Seth Farber, author of two books on mental health revolution, the most recent of which is this year’s The Spiritual Gift of Madness The Failure of Psychiatry and the Rise of the Mad Pride Movement, with:

• Tina Minkowitz, psychiatric survivor, lawyer, and director of the Center for Human Rights of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry
• Will Hall, of The Icarus Project, Madness Radio, and the Hearing Voices Network
• Ted Chabasinski, childhood ECT survivor, attorney, writer and activist, legendary speaker and activist in the psychiatric survivor’s movement
Following the speak-out against human rights violations in psychiatric treatment, protestors will be marching to 57th and 3rd, to the convention of the American Psychiatric Association, to demand that the APA honor the human rights of individuals seeking psychiatric care, by respecting the right to refuse treatment, honoring informed consent laws, and offering information about non-medical alternatives.
Because of your commitment to advocacy, and your dedicated work with populations that are vulnerable to systemic abuse, we would like to extend a warm invitation for you to join us on October 6th and add your voices to the many as we demand recognition and respect of human rights in state-funded systems.
Please do inform anyone that you know who may be affected by psychiatric treatment of this event, as it is a great opportunity to learn more about how to protect human rights in treatment setting and get involved in the movement to ensure that all people’s human rights are upheld, protected, and honored within systems that are intended to provide care and yet often cause great harm and injury.
We have attached our flyer. Please post this notification as you see fit and distribute them as needed. Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have and let us know how we might be able to help you to get involved in this important and inspiring event.
Sincerely,
We the People
